Paolo Basso

Paolo Basso is a Swiss-Italian sommelier who won the prestigious “Best Sommelier of the World” title in 2013. Following the completion of his hotel management studies in Sondalo, Valtellina, and during different work placements in Swiss hotels and restaurants, he became fascinated by the world of wine and decided to specialize in this field professionally. As a first step towards achieving this goal, he obtained the "Professional Sommelier" diploma from the Association Suisse Sommeliers Professionnels.

In addition to the long time spent working in one or two stars Michelin restaurants, Paolo Basso has worked for several years in the field of rare and collectable wines which has established him as an expert in this area. Basso is one of only five sommeliers who have won both titles of Best Sommelier of Europe and the best sommelier in the world.  In 2000, 2007, and 2010 Basso had come close the world title by getting second place, but still confirming several times his competency at an international level.

He is internationally active as a consultant to hotel chains and collaborates with Swiss Wine Promotion in Switzerland and abroad. He is also teaches at prestigious schools such as the Ecole du Vin de Changins in Switzerland and Worldsom in Bordeaux. Since 2007 he runs his own consulting firm and selling wine online with headquarters in Lugano, Switzerland, where in 2014 he gave his name, Paolo Basso Wine.
